Pondicherry, renowned for its rich spiritual heritage, is home to numerous Hindu temples that reflect its diverse cultural tapestry. Here are some notable temples:


Manakula Vinayagar Temple

Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, this ancient temple predates French colonial times. The temple's name combines 'Manal' (sand) and 'Kulam' (pond), indicative of its original seaside location. Devotees are often greeted by the temple elephant, Lakshmi, who offers blessings to visitors. The temple also features a golden chariot used during special processions.


Varadaraja Perumal Temple

Constructed in the 12th century, this temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It showcases Dravidian architecture with a striking five-tiered rajagopuram (gateway tower). The temple is renowned for its intricate carvings and the annual Brahmotsavam festival celebrated during April-May.


Vedapureeswarar Temple

This temple venerates Lord Shiva as Vedapurishvarar and Goddess Parvati as Tripurasundari. Despite being destroyed in 1748, it was reconstructed in 1788. The temple features a seven-tiered rajagopuram and hosts significant festivals like Maha Shivaratri and Brahmotsavam.


Kanniga Parameswari Temple

Unique for its blend of Tamil and French architectural styles, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti. The structure reflects European influences, evident in its arched walls and ornate decorations, while the inner sanctum maintains traditional Tamil design.


Sri Karaneswara Nataraja Temple

Located near Pudukuppam Beach, this temple stands out with its pyramid-shaped structure, reminiscent of ancient Egyptian architecture. Dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Nataraja form, the temple offers a serene ambiance by the seaside.


Sri Gokilambal Thirukameswar Temple

Situated in Villianur, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Known for its grandeur and the annual car festival, it attracts devotees from various regions.


Irumbai Shiva Temple

Panchavati Anjaneya Temple
